Terrestrial Fishing Fly Patterns

These are the Dry Flies that are tied to imitate all of the insects that are found on the ground along the edges of the streams, rivers and lakes that we fish.

They include all of the beetles, ants, grasshoppers, cicadas, crickets, spiders and any other bugs that you find in your area.

Most Terrestrials end up in the water when they are shaken off of the nearby vegetation or are carried there by the wind.

Spiders are found throughout the world. They live in jungles, cities, buildings, the forest, the dessert and everywhere in between. They are even found in the Arctic and live underwater. They range in size from almost microscopic to several centimeters across.

All Spiders are predatory and none are vegetarian. Of the 350 different species of Spiders, 200 of them have bites that will cause discomfort to humans.

The Spiders that are of interest to the fly fisherman are the ones that spin their webs along the streams, rivers, lakes and ponds where we fish. Most of the Spiders that become fish food live near the water and get knocked or blown into the water where they became fish snacks. In some areas the Spider is a very important food for the fish and in other areas, the fish never get to taste a Spider.

Take a look along the shoreline next time you go fishing and see if you can see any bugs. If you see anything moving, tie on an imitation of that bug and try your luck. The trout will love it, especially if it is windy.
