Leisenring Black Gnat Wet Fishing Fly Pattern
Soft Hackle Wet Fly Patterns are used in every area of the US, Canada, New Zealand,
South America, Australia and Europe. These patterns imitate a variety of Caddis, Mayfly, Midge and
Stone Flies.
The best way to pick a fly that is going to work is to watch the water you are fishing. Look for bugs in and above the water. Notice what shape, color and size the bugs are. Then pick a fly that matches the hatch as close as you can. A general rule of thumb is to use a smaller fly in the Spring and a larger size in the Fall. On some waters, you only have to match one of the variables. Sometimes it does not matter which fly you use as long as it is properly presented. Another great way to figure out which fly to use is to use a hatch chart. There are charts available for every region that show which fly to use, at any given time of year. Other ways of course include talking to other anglers, joining the local Trout Unlimited Chapter and asking the members, and making a stop in the local fly shop. If you only fish your local waters, you will get to know what flies work on each body of water, at what time of year. If you travel, carry lots of different patterns with you, or call ahead to the guide you will be using and ask what you should bring for fly patterns.
