Fishing the Yellowhead Highway

When you are fishing the Yellowhead highway you will be travelling the main northern highway route across
Western Canada. It starts in the East
at the corner of Portage and Main in the City of
Winnipeg, Manitoba,
and ends in the West at Masset BC,
on the Queen Charlotte Islands. With a total length of 2960 kilometers or 1776 miles, it spans the 4
Western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, and includes a 172 kilometer
ferry ride.
| When you are fishing the Yellowhead Highway you will find that each province along the way has
a vast number of fly fishing opportunities, so many in
fact that you could spend a life time fishing them all. Within an hours drive of the main highway there
are many lakes, streams, rivers, and ponds.
In these bodies of water you will find Rainbow Trout,
Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Grayling, Sturgeon, Walleye, Steelhead, Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon,
Sockeye Salmon, Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Pike Bass, as well as many different varieties of course
fish and pan fish.

Along the way there are several North/South highways that connect the Yellowhead Highway to the rest of
the Continent. There are also several major cities that have national and international airline service.
These include;
Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
Edmonton, Alberta, Prince George, BC, Smithers, BC, and Terrace, BC. In these major service centers you will also find car rentals, hotels, shopping centers as well as any other services you may require on your fishing journeys.
Along the highway there are also several larger service centers that are accessible by vehicle as well as
charter aircraft from the major centers or by private aircraft. These centers include; Portage La Prairie,
MB, Yorkton, SK, North Battleford, SK, Lloydminster, AB, Vegreville, AB, Edson, AB, Hinton, AB, Jasper, AB,
McBride, BC, Vanderhoof, BC, Burns Lake, BC, Houston, BC, Prince Rupert, BC, and Sandspit, BC.
Along the way there are also a great many small towns and Hamlets. Some boast only a single gas station,
restaurant, or motel. As you fish your way along the Yellowhead highway you will also find that there are many
Provincial and private camp grounds.
Also don?t forget if you are between the ages of 16 and 65, you will need a fishing license for each
Province that you fish in.
