Butterfly Salmon Fly
About This Fly DescriptionThe Butterfly Fly Pattern is tied on TMC, Mustad, Saber, Daiichi, Tiemco, or Orvis hooks in sizes 6-10 using Black 6/0 pre waxed thread. This fly pattern is tied with a tail of red hackle fibers, a butt of fluorescent green wool, a body of peacock herl, wings of white calf tail, and a brown hackle. Where and When To Fish This FlySalmon Fly Patterns are used in every area of the world where Salmon are found. These Patterns are both Wet and Dry. Since the Salmon don't eat after they enter fresh water, these patterns are successful because they seem to annoy the fish, triggering an attack on the fly. Choice of fly seems to be dependent in part on time of year, (Summer run or Winter run) color and area. Some colors work better on one coast than they do on the other. Other ways of course include talking to other anglers, joining the local Trout Unlimited Chapter and asking the members, and making a stop in the local fly shop. If you only fish your local waters, you will get to know what flies work on each body of water, at what time of year. If you travel, carry lots of different patterns with you, or call ahead to the guide you will be using and ask what you should bring for fly patterns. What Will this Fly CatchThese Fly Patterns have been specifically designed to catch Salmon. In some instances however, they will also catch Lake Trout, Steelhead, Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout.
